Where did alexander the great conquer4/20/2023 His body was eventually placed in a golden coffin in Alexandria, Egypt. Weakened by his travels and battles, he died there of a fever. At this point Alexander’s men refused to go farther. He defeated the Indians and founded two cities. Many of Alexander’s men wanted to go home, but instead he had them advance further into Asia. Soon afterward he captured Babylon, in what is now Iraq, and Susa, the Persian capital. In 331 bce Alexander went back into Asia and again defeated Darius. Following the unification of the multiple city states of Ancient Greece under the rule of his father, Philip II of Macedon, Alexander conquered the Persian. Near the Nile River he founded the city of Alexandria. He then controlled the whole eastern Mediterranean. Late in 332 bce Alexander took Egypt from the Persians and became pharaoh, or king. Alexander then marched southward along the coast of Phoenicia (present-day Lebanon). In 333 bce Alexander defeated King Darius III of Persia, at Issus. He freed the Greek settlements in Asia Minor (now Turkey) from Persian rule and made them his allies. In 334 bce he brought together a large army and invaded the empire controlled by Persia. He soon won the loyalty of nearly all the Greek states. In 336 bce Philip II was killed and Alexander became king. Young Alexander commanded one section of the Macedonian army. In 338 bce Alexander’s father, Philip II, brought all the Greek city-states except Sparta under his rule. After conquering the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, the Macedonian king Alexander launched a campaign into the Indian subcontinent in present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan, part of which formed the easternmost territories of the Achaemenid Empire following the Achaemenid conquest of the Indus Valley. His expedition spreads Hellenistic culture throughout the conquered lands. The Indian campaign of Alexander the Great began in 327 BC. He consolidates his victory in Persia and uses its wealth to fund his expeditions. 331329 Alexander defeats Darius at Gaugamela and, after Darius’s death, declares himself King of Asia. With his home front secured, Alexander began a campaign of conquest of the Persian Empire in 334 BC. Alexander consolidated his power by murdering a number of rivals and putting down military insurrections from Greek city-states. The Greek philosopher Aristotle gave him lessons. Alexander conquers Tyre and Egypt, where he founds the city of Alexandria. Immediately after inheriting his father Philip’s throne at the age of 20, in 336 BC. In his short life he conquered almost all parts of the world that were known to his people.Īlexander was born in 356 bce in Pella, the capital of Macedonia, a kingdom to the north of the Greek states.
